Our oceans hold a wealth of life, but their sustainability rests in the hands of those who navigate their depths – the fishing vessel owners.
In lieu of the Fisheries Improvement Project, a workshop on Social Responsibility Assessment was held with Fishing Vessel Owners enrolled in the Fisheries Improvement Project on December 21, 2023 at Pescador Conference Room, General Santos Fishport Complex, General Santos.
The workshop focused on fair labor practices, crew safety, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. It aims to encourage a collaborative exploration of how owners should realize the importance of social responsibility in sustainable fisheries and become agents of positive change themselves within the industry, and further be the true champions of responsible fishing.
A presentation about Marine Stewardship Council and FFSAPI-Sargen Handline FIP given by Ms. Shalimar Abdurahman enlightened the participants about the future of the fishery through the Fisheries Improvement Initiatives. She then proceeded with explaining the role of fishing vessel owners on social responsibility.
After the orientation, the boat owners and representatives were interviewed to assess the operator’s social practices using the SRA Tool developed using the guide and standards from fisheryprogress.org.
Collectively, a focused group discussion was conducted for each sector; municipal and commercial boat owners.
The workshop is the start of a transformative journey and a tangible commitment of everyone to a better future for our oceans and the communities that depend on them.
