User Training on Vessel monitoring systems & Electronic Reporting System (ERS)

General Santos City Commercial Tuna Handliners underwent User Training on Vessel Monitoring System and Electronic Report System, co-organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing & Allied Industries, Inc (SFFAI) as part of the Fishery Improvement Program (FIP).

In abidance with the mandate on the installation of vessel monitoring system, a training on Basic troubleshooting of VMS and proper reporting of catches in the Electronic Reporting System (ERS) for Commercial Tuna Handliners was held and facilitated by Mr. Marlo M. Demo-os, Officer-in-charge of Vessel Operations System to enlighten fishermen on the importance and functions of VMS & ERS.

Mr. Demo-os discussed the system data flows, how Vessel Monitoring System works, what information are being sent by the ERS unit, and the frequency of data sending. In addition, he explained that VMS is a satellite-based system that provides data such as location, speed, course, and other activities of fishing vessels at regular intervals of time.

Mr. Demo-os explained that the data from the Electronic Reporting System (ERS) is collected by fishing authorities and it is made sure that the vessels are following all international fishing regulations and are within fishing limits. It is useful in providing data about the arrival and departure timings of ships such as cargo vessels and commercial fishing vessels to the port authorities. He also mentioned that the system enables the authorities to take the necessary actions in case of any violation of code by any of the vessels.

The training went successful, the participants responded well during the simulation activity. A second batch of Tuna handliners will undergo the same training and workshop as part of the Fishery Improvement Program’s goal which is to improve the long-term health and sustainability of fisheries.
