From October 14 to 19, 2024, Becky Caton, Key Traceability Social Auditor visited General Santos City to conduct a Social Risk Assessment focusing on transparency and operational compliance within the fishing industry. The multi-day audit aimed to assess vessel operations, management practices, and crew conditions across various fishing sites and companies.
The event commenced with a port tour and an opening meeting at the Pescador Conference Room, followed by interviews with vessel owners and management. Subsequent days involved on-site visits to municipal and commercial vessels at locations such as the Gensan Fishport Complex, SAFII Compound, and Maasim. A total of 12 vessels were audited with crews, captains and owners interviewed.
The audit concluded with a closing meeting where preliminary findings were shared for the reference of the stakeholders.
This initiative highlights the industry’s commitment to sustainable and transparent fishing practices, ensuring compliance with global traceability requirements and enhancing the welfare of workers in the sector.
