SARGEN HANDLINE FIP Meeting with the City MAyor’s OFFICE

FFSAPI – SARGEN Handline FIP stakeholders was invited by the City Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao on June 26, 2023 to present the Fisheries Improvement Project of the FFSAPI and SARGEN Handline and on how the Local Government of General Santos City can support the FFSAPI – SARGEN Handline Fisheries Improvement Project.

An overview of the Philippine Tuna exports in 2021 has been reported for the reference of the attendees on the status of fishing industry in the city. It was followed by a presentation on the FFSAPI-SARGEN HANDLINE Fisheries Improvement Project for Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna Handline Fishing in Fisheries Management Areas 2 and 3. There are currently 111 vessels enrolled in the project, 67 are commercial handline vessels and 44 municipal handline vessels. 59 out of 67 commercial vessels are installed with VMS, 2 already submitted their requirements, and 6 are still processing their application requirements.

The upcoming 5-day Live-in Training scheduled on July 10-14, 2023 and July 24 – 28, 2023 was also discussed which will cover these topics:

  1. Orientation on FIP and MSC

  2. Orientation on BFAR Regulations (FAOs) and WCPFC CMM’s applicable to Tuna Handline Fishery

  3. Training on Species Identification

  4. Training on Proper Handling of Tuna

  5. Practical Navigation Training

  6. Training on Handline Logsheet Accomplishment

  7. User Training of Vessel Monitoring System (troubleshooting) and Electronic Reporting System

Local Government of General Santos City was requester for their help on the implementation project which includes financial support and installation of VMS and ERS for municipal fishermen. In addition, the LGU will pass an ordinance on the establishment of a catch documentation and traceability system.
