Orientation and Validation Visit to Mati City by the FIP Team

The FFSAPI-SARGEN Handline Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) Team conducted an orientation and validation visit in Mati City to engage local fishers and promote the adoption of sustainable fishing practices.

The activity was held in two sessions: the morning session focused on FIP-member fishers unloading at Mati Fishport, while the afternoon session was attended by members of the Tuna Handliners and Fisheries Association (THAFA) of Mati City.

During the event, the FIP Implementing Team highlighted the vital role of fishers in advancing sustainable handline fishing. They also presented the support mechanisms provided by SFFAII to strengthen the industry. One of the key topics discussed was the SPC Tuna Tagging initiative, emphasizing the scientific importance of tag recovery and the corresponding incentives for fishers.

The team also reviewed catch flow validation procedures and the proper completion of log sheets to ensure compliance with traceability requirements. Additionally, they reaffirmed their ongoing coordination with BFAR Regions 11 and 12 to enhance validation processes at Mati Fishport.

These efforts represent significant steps in the industry’s journey toward achieving MSC certification, and the team encouraged the continued active participation of local fishers in the FIP.
