Batch 2 of Gensan Commercial Tuna Handliners  training on Tuna Fisheries Sustainable management

Fishery rules and regulations are designed to prevent overfishing and ensure the sustainable exploitation of fish stocks. By setting catch limits, size restrictions, and fishing seasons, these regulations help maintain healthy fish populations and prevent the depletion of species.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in partnership with the SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII),  facilitated a training on the Relevant Fishery Laws, Rules and Regulations for the 2nd batch of Commercial Tuna Handliners from General Santos City on July 25, 2023 at London Beach Resort and Hotels.

Dr. Alma C. Dickson, the Fishing Technology and Management Consultant of BFAR-CFDdiscussed the Handline Law, National Tuna Fish Aggregating Device or FAD Management Policy, and the Implementing Guidelines on Group Handline Fishing Operations in High Seas of the WCPFC Convention area.

Rules and regulations in fishery laws play a critical role in the sustainable management and conservation of aquatic resources, as well as the overall well-being of ecosystems and communities that rely on fisheries. She emphasized the importance of Handline Fishing boat registration to secure permits and clearances and that Philippine handline fishing boats can operate in international waters only with appropriate permits and that Compliance with safety, manning, and communication standards is required.

The same from the first batch, Dr. Dickson also discussed about the implementing rules on the construction of a handline fishing boat and the objectives of the National Tuna Fish Aggregating Device or FAD Management Policy which is to reduce catch of juvenile yellowfin and bigeye tuna and to ensure the sustainability of tuna population.

Lastly, Dr. Dickson explained the importance of knowing the rules and regulations in fishery because  violating fishery laws can result in fines, penalties, or even legal action and knowing these laws helps them avoid unintentional violations and the associated consequences and it also fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability within the fishing community.
