The document, titled “Views of Two Organizations on Harvest Control Rules and Strategies for Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna,” was submitted by industry representatives from the Philippines during the 21st Regular Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), held from November 28 to December 3, 2024, in Suva, Fiji.
The report presents the perspectives of two Philippine organizations on the development and implementation of harvest control rules (HCRs) and strategies aimed at managing the populations of Yellowfin and Bigeye tuna. The organizations – Fresh Frozean Seafood Association of the Philippines, Inc. and Sargen Fish Port Tuna Handline Fishing Association, Inc. provided their views on maintaining the sustainability of these important fish stocks while balancing the economic and social needs of the fishing industry. The submission reflects the Philippines’ active involvement in international efforts to ensure responsible fishing practices and the long-term health of tuna resources in the region.
By contributing to discussions on these management strategies, the Philippines emphasized the importance of equitable and science-based approaches to resource allocation. Their input seeks to influence policy decisions that align with the shared goals of conservation, food security, and economic viability in the fisheries sector.
