VMS AND ERS 2nd Batch User Training

A training on Basic troubleshooting of VMS and proper reporting of catches in the Electronic Reporting System (ERS) for the 2nd bacth of Commercial Tuna Handliners was held last July 27, 2023 at London Beach resort and Hotel.

In abidance with the mandate on the installation of vessel monitoring system, General Santos City Commercial Tuna Handliners underwent User Training on Vessel Monitoring System and Electronic Report System, facilitated by Mr. Marlo M. Demo-os, Officer-in-charge of Vessel Operations from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and co-organized by the SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing & Allied Industries, Inc (SFFAI) as part of the Fishery Improvement Program (FIP).

To enlighten fishermen on the importance and functions of VMS & ERS, Mr. Demo-os discussed the system data flows, how Vessel Monitoring System works, what information are being sent by the ERS unit, and the frequency of data sending. He also explained that VMS is a satellite-based system that provides data such as location, speed, course, and other activities of fishing vessels at regular intervals of time.

According to Mr. Demo-os the data from the Electronic Reporting System (ERS) is collected by fishing authorities and to make sure that the vessels are following all international fishing regulations and are within fishing limits. Additionally, Mr. Demo-os explained that the ERS provides data about the arrival and departure timings of ships to the port authorities. He also mentioned that the system enables the authorities to take the necessary actions in case of any violation of code by any of the vessels.

Before the end of the session, participants go through a simulation activity to practice and evaluate their learning about the topic.  The goal of the workshop is to improve the long-term health and sustainability of fisheries.
