2nd Batch of Commercial Tuna Handliners Underwent Tuna Species Identification Training

The SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII), in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), facilitated the 2nd batch capacity building workshop for Commercial Tuna Handliners in General Santos City last July 24, 2023 in support to the implementation of the Fishery Improvement Projects (FIP)

Facilitators Mr. Renie Dumlao Diocon and Mr. Aldrin M. Gultian of the Philippine Fisheries Observer Program of BFAR-MFDC discussed about identification of Tuna Species Commonly Caught in Tuna Handline Fishing Vessels, its Biology and Morphology. They explained how crucial is marine species identification I in terms of conservation management for it provides a foundation for understanding, protecting, and sustainably utilizing our marine ecosystems and resources.

Aside from theoretical lectures on facts about fishes and fish taxonomy, the session also comprised with practical workshop on species identification which aims to teach the participants to use a step-by-step process of species identification. According to BFAR, several species, especially sharks, present a challenge for identification, especially when they are landed headed and/or finned and many species were misidentified due to lack of knowledge, experience and appropriate identification literature.

Overall, the workshop was a success, it gave fishermen the ability to identify marine species and empowering them to become stewards of marine resources. This also help them to target specific species while avoiding unintentional bycatch of non-targeted or protected species, minimize ecological impacts and ensure sustainability of fishing operations.
