In September 2020, the Fresh Frozen Seafood Association Inc. (FFSAPI) and SARGEN Fish port Tuna Handline Fishing Association (SARGEN Handline) launched the Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) for Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna Fisheries in the Fishery Management Areas 2 & 3.
It is now becoming more important for fisheries to demonstrate their social accountability and to provide information about this publicly. It is, therefore, recommended to list the fisheries improvement project on www.fisheryprogress.org, which is a ‘one-stop-shop’ website for information on the progress of global fishery improvement projects. The listing on the website will allow businesses that support fishery improvement projects to efficiently, consistently, and reliably track the FIP progress.
Fisheries sustainability cannot be achieved alone. The FFSAPI – SARGEN Handline FIP sought for a third-party auditor, Key Traceability, to review the initial pre-assessment of the Fishery prior to it to be listed in the fisheryprogress.org website.
Key Traceability provides quality FIPs “Key Traceability FIPs” to clients globally. Key Traceability provides technical and scientific advice relating to FIPs and is currently engaged in multiple FIPs in West Africa, the Indian, and Pacific Oceans. (keytraceability.com)
Transparency and stakeholder participation is a vital tool in a successful fisheries improvement project. Establishing a credible FIP recognition, the FIP can continue to work on measurable improvements on their journey towards certification.
