3rd All About Tuna Handline Summit Delivers Insights and Initiatives for Sustainable Fishing

The recently concluded “All About Tuna Handline Summit,” held on August 30, 2023, at SM Gensan Meeting Rooms, brought together experts, stakeholders, and industry leaders to discuss critical issues surrounding the tuna handline fishery in the Philippines. The event featured insightful presentations, engaging discussions, and valuable networking opportunities.

The summit opened with a warm welcome address by Mr. Dominic R. Salazar, setting the tone for a day filled with knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

Throughout the event, four topics were explored:

1. The status of Tuna Handline Fishery in the Philippines was presented by Mr. Rafael V. Ramiscal and Mr. Dennis James L. Piollo, they provided a comprehensive overview of the current status of tuna handline fishing in the Philippines, shedding light on challenges and opportunities.

 2. Incentivizing Handline Fishers on Sustainable Practices was passionately discussed by Ms. Joann P. Binondo. She presented the WWF Cross Practice Innovation Fund Project ‘Catch to Cash’ and addressed the importance of traceability.

3. ALON – an Alternative Vessel Monitoring Technology for Tuna Municipal Fishery was introduced by Mr. William Patrick McGrath, presenting an innovative solution to enhance monitoring and management in the industry.

4. FFSAPI-SARGEN Tuna Handline Fisheries Improvement Project: Ms. Emma F. Garay presented insights into the FFSAPI-SARGEN Tuna Handline Fisheries Improvement Project, focusing on its role in enhancing the sustainability of the industry.

In addition, Ms. Dinna Umengan also shared important updates regarding the resolutions from the 22nd National Tuna Congress, further underscoring the commitment to addressing crucial issues within the industry.

The summit provided attendees with two open forums, offering a platform for questions, discussions, and the exchange of ideas. A networking session and coffee break provided valuable opportunities for participants to connect and collaborate.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Usop Pendaliday Jr., BFAR 12 Regional Director, who expressed his gratitude for the summit’s success and the shared commitment to the future sustainability of the tuna handline fishery in the Philippines.
